Who am I??

I'm Fraser Weir, a kiwi (currently living in the UK) who's passionate about our unique wildlife and especially our very unique birds...

I also am a massive lover of Shags... I couldn't have grown up in a better place than Aotearoa New Zealand, a country that has the most species of shag found... 13-14 pending on what you count as a species... Not to mention.... All but one are endemic or an endemic subspecies to Aotearoa, meaning they are found nowhere else in the world...

From a very young age, I just found shags such fascinating and amazing birds, birds that are just as at home, in and under the water as they are flying and for a bird that can range up to a size of a small swan (Black shag/Great cormorant).... they are able to land and nest in trees.

I have spent many hours watching them at a local breeding colony in Rotorua, my home town... Three (sometimes four) out of the 14 species of shag are found in Rotorua around the many lakes, wetlands and rivers of the area.
